Ambassadorial Scholarships

Ambassadorial Scholarships is the oldest and best-known program of The Rotary Foundation — a tradition of excellence dating to 1947. Rotarians worldwide provide the funds that make this program such a success. These generous contributions are an investment in today’s scholars: they represent Rotary’s faith that these promising students will become tomorrow’s leaders and will make substantial contributions both to their communities and to the world.

Ambassadorial Scholarship Program Objectives

  • The Ambassadorial Scholarships Program supports the mission of The Rotary Foundation to further international understanding and world peace by:
  • Increasing awareness of and respect for cultural differences by sending Ambassadors of Goodwill to study in another country;
  • Instilling in scholars the Rotary ideal of “Service Above Self” through active participation in Rotary service projects;
  • Encouraging scholars to dedicate their personal and professional lives to improving the quality of life for the people of their home community and country;
  • Developing leaders who can address the humanitarian needs of the world community;
  • Impacting all areas of the world through a balanced geographical distribution of scholars;
  • Encouraging Rotarians worldwide to increase the educational opportunities for scholars from low-income countries; and
  • Fostering a lifelong association between Rotary and its scholars.

Note: District 6630 does not award cultural or multi-year scholarships, only the academic year scholarships. It is our understanding that we have only one scholarship to award again this coming year.

Rotary Scholars List...

Updated 09/29/06:
This is an updated list of past, present, and future scholars who are in the district and available for speaking to Rotary clubs. Please bear in mind that their schedules may not fit with a club's meeting times. I believe we have enough scholars around to find one that would work!

Also, some of these scholars may need transportation to and from the meeting place. Each club will need to work that out with the scholar. Download List (PDF).

I am happy to report that all three of our 2006-2007 Ambassadorial scholars are “off and running” --Emily Peters in Galway, Ireland, Billy Navarre in London, England, and David Konieczkowski in Oxford, England. They will all be traveling to Wales for something called “Link Weekend”. It’s an orientation for all Rotary scholars about to start their studies in that part of the world. Meanwhile, our two 2005-2006 scholars are half-way through their academic year abroad… Kimberly Berls in Buenos Aires, Argentina and Jen McMillin in Canberra, Australia.

It would be wonderful if some of you reading this update would take the time to send a note to our scholars. They are far from home and probably missing their friends from NE Ohio. I am willing to bet you will receive a prompt response and a “thank you. Their e-mail addresses are:

For those of you who have had the pleasure of meeting our 2004-2005 scholar, Emily Cooper Smith, I should let you know she has moved to Washington D.C. She is working for an NGO called InterAction, an alliance of 160 members who do development, humanitarian and relief work in every country in the world. She returned to NE Ohio at the end of August to help the district scholarship committee select our 2007-2008 nominee. She is doing well and loves living in our nation’s capital. You can contact her at: Chloe998@yahoo.com or chloe998@aol.com

It has been my privilege and pleasure to chair our district’s Ambassadorial Scholarship Committee for the past five years. If any of you are interested in becoming involved with this special program, please email or phone 216-464-6266.
